Mid-year reflection often sounds like this:
- I need to get better at everything.
- I need to be more consistent.
- I need to find balance.
But here’s the uncomfortable truth:
Leadership growth doesn’t come from balance. It comes from leverage.
In the next six months, the leaders who make the biggest jump wont be the ones who try to improve all nine competencies at once.
They’ll be the ones who choose a purposeful focus a strategic imbalance and let that one shift create second-order gains everywhere else.

Why balance is a trap (neuroscience + reality)
Your brain changes through repetition.
When you spread your attention across too many targets, you get:
- shallow reps
- inconsistent cues
- weak reinforcement
- more decision fatigue
So you end up busy, but not rewired.
Strategic imbalance works because it creates a clear signal:
- This is what matters now.
- This is what Im practicing under pressure.
- This is the identity Im reinforcing.

The 9-Competency Scorecard Reset (what you’re really doing)
A scorecard isn’t a report card.
Its a design tool.
It helps you answer three mid-year questions:
1. What strengths are carrying me right now?
2. What gaps are creating friction or rework?
3. What one competency if strengthened would unlock the next level?

The 5-Minute Strategic Imbalance Reset (simple + usable)
Set a timer for 5 minutes. You’re not trying to be perfect you’re trying to be honest.
Step 1: Choose your next six months arena (60 seconds)
Pick the arena where you most want momentum:
- Leading through change
- Building trust and psychological safety
- Execution and follow-through
- Strategic thinking and decision-making
- Influence and stakeholder alignment
- Developing others / building capability
Write one sentence:
- In the next six months, I want to lead better in ________.
Step 2: Quick-rate the 9 competencies (90 seconds)
Rate each competency based on your last 60 days.
- 1 = inconsistent under pressure
- 3 = solid but not reliable
- 5 = consistent, others feel it
Write fast. No overthinking.
- Integrity & Respect: _
- Relationship Management: _
- Emotional Intelligence: _
- Execution & Accountability: _
- Strategic Insight: _
- Transformational Leadership: _
- Interpersonal Effectiveness: _
- Purposeful Messaging: _
- Instilling a Growth Mindset: _
Step 3: Find your leverage pair (90 seconds)
Now choose two competencies:
1. Your Anchor (the strength you can rely on)
2. Your Lever (the one that will unlock the next level)
Use these prompts:
- Anchor: When Im at my best, I naturally lead with ________.
- Lever: If I improved ________ by one level, the ripple effect would be biggest.
Examples of high-leverage Levers:
- Execution & Accountability (reduces rework, increases trust)
- Purposeful Messaging (creates alignment, reduces confusion)
- Emotional Intelligence (increases range under pressure)
- Strategic Insight (improves decisions and prioritization)
Step 4: Design your strategic imbalance (60 seconds)
Write your focus statement:
- For the next 30 days, I will over-invest in ________.
Then add the boundary:
- I will stop/limit ________ because it creates drag.
Examples:
- I will over-invest in Purposeful Messaging.
- I will stop adding more detail when clarity is the real need.
- I will over-invest in Execution & Accountability.
- I will stop rescuing tasks I delegated.
Step 5: Choose one minimum viable rep (30 seconds)
Pick one rep you can do 3x/week.
- Three times per week, I will practice ________ for 10 minutes.
Quick examples by competency:
- Purposeful Messaging: write a one-sentence point + one-sentence ask before key messages
- Execution & Accountability: define done + next checkpoint in every handoff
- Emotional Intelligence: pause, label the emotion, choose the response (not the impulse)
- Strategic Insight: write the trade-off youre choosing and what youre not doing
- Relationship Management: send one strength + appreciation + next step message weekly

How to turn this into a 30-day reset (without making it complicated)
Week 1: Make the rep obvious
- Put the rep on your calendar (10 minutes, 3x/week)
- Put a visible tracker somewhere you cant ignore
Week 2: Add feedback
Ask one person:
- When I communicate priorities, whats unclear?
- Where do you see me creating friction without realizing it?
Week 3: Increase the stakes slightly
Practice the same rep in a harder context:
- a tense meeting
- a decision with uncertainty
- a conversation youve been avoiding
Week 4: Lock in the identity
After each rep, write one line:
- Today I practiced being a leader who ________.
That’s how you teach your brain what to protect.
Mid-Year reflection question
If you could only improve one competency by one level in the next six months the one that would make everything else easier which would it be?
